New coach set sights on the top flight

Keilor has appointed Pete Godfrey as its new men’s Big V basketball coach.

Godfrey brings to the role more than 40 years experience in basketball.

His most recent position was as coach at Kilsyth, where he led the club for more than 300 games.

Godfrey was an assistant coach in the South East Basketball Association for eight years and was named Victorian youth coach of the year in 2014 and 2015.

He said he was excited to be taking on a new challenge.

“Following a very difficult decision to leave Kilsyth, it was then a case of where to next coaching-wise,” Godfrey said.

“Keilor has a really solid junior foundation … and is looking to re-establish itself as a basketball powerhouse at senior level out in this part of Melbourne so that its homegrown players can see a pathway from juniors to elite-level seniors.

“I am looking forward to the opportunity to help that plan through 2016 and the challenges that will come with it.”

Godfrey replaces Steve Toy, who stepped down at the end of the season. Toy led Keilor to fifth place in division 1 this year.

Godfrey said his first order of business would be to form a hard-working roster for next season with a strong focus on promotion to the Big V championship division.

“The aim for 2016 will be to assemble a roster that is prepared to train and play hard, grow together, and be capable of pushing to state championship in 2017, given the direction the club wants to head,” Godfrey said.

Meanwhile, Carey Paps has been re-appointed coach of the Keilor women’s team for the 2016 season.
