Beyond wildest dreams for Keilor

When Keilor Football Club decided to form a women’s side last year, the Blues could have never predicted the dominance the team would deliver in year one.

The Blues capped off their season with a Western Region and Essendon District Women’s Football League premiership on Sunday.

They went through the season undefeated, scoring 1799 points – 600 more than second-placed Manor Lakes.

Three of the league’s five leading goalkickers were Blues.

Brooke Todero took out the leading goalkicker award with 59.

Defensively they were just as strong, conceding 63 points in 13 games. Their percentage was a massive 2855.56.

Manor Lakes’ 22 grand final points constituted the highest score scored against the Blues for the season, with two of the goals coming late in the fourth quarter.

The Blues still won by 76 points.

Blues coach Emma Kerry said it hadn’t occurred to those involved that the side would be so strong in its debut year.

Most of the players hadn’t played football before, but interest in joining the side was so high that players were turned away.

“We didn’t go out to kick big scores,” Kerry said.

“It was about sticking to our structures and the gameplan we set up during the week.

“A lot of the focus goes on how good our midfield and forward line are, but our back line was under pressure a lot.”

Kerry, who has been re-appointed for next year, said this season was only the beginning for the women’s program at Keilor.

“It’s the most enjoyable season I’ve had in 14 years of being involved in football,” she said.

“I’ll enjoy the next couple of days celebrating with the girls before I go away in a couple of weeks’ time.

“I’ll come back refreshed and have a real crack again. I couldn’t say no to the girls.”
