Sports shorts: Days are numbered for Werribee Devils

Basketball

Werribee Devils will round out their 2016 Big V basketball men’s championship season at home on Saturday night when Ringwood pays a visit to Eagle Stadium. The Devils’ three-game winning streak was brought to a halt in the penultimate round in a 113-83 loss to Eltham Wildcats. In women’s division 1, Werribee Devils were slaughtered 97-41 by the undefeated Sunbury Jets. The Devils will finish their season on the road at Mildura on Saturday evening.

Hockey

Werribee breathed life into its Hockey Victoria men’s Vic League 2 finals hopes with a 6-1 thrashing of fourth-placed CV Blazers at President’s Park on Saturday. The Tigers were well on their way to victory with four goals at half-time and kept the Blazers at bay in the second half to run out big winners. Sam Huxtable and Ross Cowlishaw scored two goals apiece for the Tigers. In women’s Vic League 2, Werribee’s finals dreams are all but over after a 8-0 loss to top-of-the-ladder Old Xavarians.

Soccer

Out-of-form Hoppers Crossing has tumbled to fifth in the FFV men’s state league 2 standings after a 3-2 loss to Heidelberg Stars. John Little and Daniel Sweeney found the back of the net for the Reds, but it was no consolation as their team slumped to a fourth loss in five games. The Reds are seven points outside the top two and their promotion hopes have almost faded away. In state league 4, Truganina Hornets crushed Spring Hills 4-0 to get some breathing room above from the relegation zone.

Football

Werribee Centrals had an emphatic 47-point win over East Geelong in the GDFL seniors. Phillip Jones booted five goals for the Centurions and Tito Nyawela secured best-on-ground honours. In VAFA division 4, Westbourne Grammarians have officially sealed the minor premiership after a 102-point belting of Eley Park Sharks. Point Cook is in danger of slipping from second after a 10-point loss to Mount Lilydale.
