Avondale Heights and Taylors Lakes looking ahead

It’s been an up and down start for the combined Avondale Heights and Taylors Lakes’ women’s side, but they’re hopeful things are on the up.

The team won its first match against Keilor Park, but were forced to forfeit their second match due to players not being available.

Avondale Heights’ women’s coordinator, Sevil Francis said injuries and work commitments, meant they didn’t have the numbers needed to take the field in round two.

She said they were hopeful of having enough players for this week’s match with Keilor.

She said there had been some other players who had expressed some interest in playing in joining the side, and they would welcome anyone who wanted to come down and play.

“We’ve been getting the word out there,” she said.

“It’s taken time, and time is our enemy.

“We’re going to troop on and we’re not going to give up.”

Francis said the idea of having the two clubs come together and having a combined side, was to ensure everyone interested could still play.

She said it was about getting the word out there about the side.

“We were putting the team together and had about eight or nine girls at the time,” she said.

“We tried to work on something with getting players from another league and then we heard Taylors Lakes was about to fold their women’s side.

“Being part of the EDFL, I put in a call to Julie [Chitsos] from Taylors Lakes and said why not join us.”

The team is currently training at Avondale Heights, but is looking to have one night a week at each club.

They are also looking at having a football jumper which combines the two team’s jumpers.

Francis said they were hopeful that both clubs would have enough players next season to field individual sides.

Anyone interested in joining the side and being involved with Avondale Heights can contact Sevil Francis 0416 005 220, meanwhile anyone who wants to be affiliated with Taylors Lakes can contact Julie Chitsos on 0409 259 389.
