Albion finally cash in on form turnaround

Albion’s improved recent form has finally translated into a win in Western Region Football League division 1.

The Cats had gone close to causing an upset in the two games prior, but had to wait until Saturday night to break through for their first victory since round three – almost two months ago.

The Chris O’Keefe-coached side came from behind in the last quarter to beat St Albans by 15 points in a hard-fought game under lights at Kings Park Reserve.

Albion led at quarter-time and the main break, but when the Saints piled on six goals to three in the third quarter, the Cats appeared to be headed for a sixth straight loss.

However, they found a way in the last quarter, kicking four goals to nil to record a memorable win.

Cody Bench, Johnathan O’Brien and Nick Weightman were outstanding for the Cats, while Nick Millar kicked two vital goals in a game in which six-pointers were hard to come by.

Albion has moved up to seventh place, while St Albans dropped a spot to eighth.

The Saints are in a rut of their own, losing their past five games.

Adam Short, Brandon Kilty and Robert Nikolic could hold their head high for the Saints, but their fine work was to no avail.

Albion will travel to Caroline Springs with confidence on Saturday, while St Albans has a tough assignment away to Hoppers Crossing.

Meanwhile, Sunshine made it four wins on the trot by beating Caroline Springs by 26 points. The Kangaroos, improved to 5-4, are a game outside the top five.

Fabian Brancatisano and Lachlan Smart kicked three goals apiece for the Kangaroos, while Matthew Hutchesson was named best-on-ground. Josh Mellington snared four goals for Caroline Springs.

In division 2, Albanvale had a dismal day, thrashed by 99 points on the road at West Footscray.

In division 3, Sunshine Heights had to dig deep to beat Glen Orden by 14 points, while Braybrook trounced North Sunshine by 81 points.
