Life under new coach Brendan Hallinan got off to a great start for Sunshine in the Western Region Football League on Saturday.
The Kangaroos had a 36-point win against arch rival Albion, 20.7 (127) – 13.13 (91).
The performance was even more comprehensive than the score suggests, with Sunshine conceding five goals to one in the final term.
Up forward, Jesse McLellan booted four goals for the Kangaroos, forming a strong partnership with Cory Connor and Lachlan Hutchesson, who combined for six goals between them.
For Albion, Cameron Holdsworth worked hard to combat the Sunshine pressure and finished the match with four goals.
The loss is the second in a row for the Cats, now bottom of the WRFL’s division 1 ladder. Sunshine is in third spot after a round one bye.
This week will pit the Kangaroos against Werribee Districts while Albion takes on Hoppers Crossing.
In other weekend results, Deer Park continued to smash and bash its way through the league, this time with a crushing win against Altona. The Lions controlled the match from the outset, keeping the Vikings scoreless in the first quarter and giving up just two goals by half-time.
There were no such problems at the other end of the ground with Deer Park booting eight first-half goals. This pattern of play continued after the main break, with the Lions claiming a 76-point win, 18.14 (122) – 7.4 (46).
Last year’s division 1 leading goal kicker James Wong sustained his impressive form, booting six majors for Deer Park in the victory.
In other round two results, Spotswood got the better of St Albans and Hoppers Crossing smashed Port Melbourne.
