VSDCA: Sunshine puts up a fight but falls to Roxburgh Park

On paper it appeared a huge mismatch, but for a while on Saturday afternoon it looked as if Sunshine could cause one of the upsets of the Sub District cricket season.

In a battle between first and last on the table, the Crows were clearly competing out of their division in the north-west group against all-conquering Roxburgh Park Broadmeadows, but that didn’t stop them putting up a fight.

After winning the toss and bowling first, Sunshine had the Roxburgh Park top order in trouble, breaking through four times before 20 runs were on the board.

The wickets continued to tumble throughout the afternoon with Falcons slipping to 5-45, 6-70 and 7-90 in their innings.

But the Crows lacked a little bit of polish when it came to making the most of the strong start and Roxburgh Park squeezed out 9-134.

Sunshine managed just 74 in reply, a result that condemned the Crows to finish the home-and-away season last on the ladder with just one win.

At the other end of the table, Roxburgh Park secured a home qualifying final this week against sixth-placed Ivanhoe.

Other finals match-ups include Plenty Valley taking on Yarraville and Melton squaring off against Altona.

A late collapse against Coburg cost Werribee a finals berth, the Tigers finishing the season in seventh spot.

Chasing 112 to win, they crashed from 0-47 and 4-89 to be all out for 108, finishing one point behind Ivanhoe.
