Cameron Zammit is a revhead winner with a remote control in hand.
The 13-year-old Copperfield College student travelled to Canberra last week for the Australian radio-controlled car off-road national championships.
Cameron proved cool under the pressure of competing against more than 50 entrants from all over Australia.
The Hillside resident was the top qualifier in both the two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive stock categories.
He went on to win the four-wheel drive category and was officially crowned national champion.
Cameron’s father, Anthony Zammit, said it was a fantastic result.
“I thought he would make the top 10,” Anthony said. “After early practice, he was heading towards being one of the favourites. From there, he just really turned it on come race day.
“He’s probably one of the youngest Australian champions and he also managed to take out the top junior racer award on both days, which was a great result.”
When he’s not taking on competitors from all over Australia, Cameron trains with the Keilor Off Road RC Car Club.
Despite only taking up the sport 18 months ago, he has earned podium finishes at races in Tasmania.
Cameron is now turning his attention to the Victorian championships, which will take place in Knox at the end of the month.
“In this sport, hand-eye co-ordination is massive,” Anthony said.
“That is pretty much what has put Cameron in good stead. He’s clocked up a lot of track time this year.”
