Taekwondo: Pino Georgievski ready to take on the world

Age is no barrier for Delahey’s Pino Georgievski.

The 12-year-old is already a five-time taekwondo state champion and three-time national champion.

But conquering Australia is no longer a challenge for Georgievski, who has turned his attention to taking on the world.

The rising star will compete at this month’s Commonwealth taekwondo championships in Edinburgh.

It will be the first time Georgievski has represented Australia and his mother, Leanne, says her son is counting down the days until his event.

“They had a selection session in Perth,” she said. “He qualified and then received a notification that he will be representing Australia at the Commonwealth champion- ships.

“He went to Korea for a training camp last year, but this will be his first time representing Australia overseas. He was absolutely ecstatic when he found out.”

Georgievski will compete in the cadets’ under 37- kilogram division.

He trains four nights a week at Fighting Lyons Taekwondo Club in Essendon with former Olympic representative Paul Lyons.

“His coaches call him the technician,” Ms Georgievski said. “He’s always thinking when he fights; he’s always anticipating his opponent’s next move.”

To further his development, Georgievski will attend a specialised sports school in Maribyrnong College next year.

In the meantime, he is looking for any potential sponsors to help with his trip overseas.
