WRFL: Saints aim for finals after beating Werribee Districts in thriller

St Albans coach Marcus Barclay believes his side will go into the Western Region Football League finals with plenty of confidence after a thrilling one-point win against Werribee Districts on Saturday.

The Saints have beaten every division 1 side except undefeated Deer Park.

In a match played predominantly between the two 50-metre arcs, the Saints made the most of their chances when going forward to secure the 12.8 (80) to 11.13 (79) win.

“To get through it and win after losing by 60 points last time we played them was very pleasing,” Barclay said.

“Outside of Deer Park, we’ve beaten everyone … it goes to show, when the finals hit it’s going to be an incredible series.”

Lachlan Baddeley continued his brilliant year for St Albans with four goals, while Joel West put in another outstanding performance in the ruck.

In other division 1 games, Albion produced an upset win against Hoppers Crossing, Deer Park was too good for Port Melbourne and Altona beat Sunshine.

St Albans remains in fourth spot on the division 1 ladder, one win behind third-placed Spotswood.

The Saints take on seventh-placed Sunshine this Saturday.

“Sunshine are always really hard to beat at their home ground and they’re always really good games between Sunshine and St Albans,” Barclay said.
