Western Bulldogs’ Whitten Project: A future leader gets coaching

Gasha Admassu is busy kicking goals – life goals.

The year 9 St Albans Secondary College student is taking part in the Western Bulldogs’ Whitten Project, which gives 40 boys and girls under 16 from Brimbank, Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay, Melton and Moonee Valley the chance to develop leadership skills through sport, especially football.

The 14-year-old has started an eight-month program under the direction of a full-time mentor based at Whitten Oval.

He will have access to a range of experiences, including access to the club’s inner sanctum, both at the club and on match days, participation in a half-time AFL 9s game at Etihad Stadium, leadership sessions with Bulldogs coaches and staff and skills clinics with players.

Gasha has already been to a Bulldogs match and has also seen the Melbourne Vixens netball team in action.

“It helps you to be a good leader through sports,” he said.

“I want to be involved in the community – not just finish my studies and that’s it.

“I want to inspire young kids to do something better.”

Gasha is a keen sports fan and has started playing indoor soccer.
