Sunshine Heights Cricket Club fast bowler Akon Mawien has capped off a brilliant season by being named “athlete of the year” in the Brimbank Sports Awards.
Mawien, 16, led Sunshine Heights to its first grand final win in 24 years and took 31 wickets for the season at an average of 6.45.
He has been selected to further his career at Premier Cricket club Footscray Edgewater.
Five sportspeople were inducted into the Brimbank sports volunteer hall of fame at last Wednesday’s awards ceremony.
