EDFL: Burnside Heights Bears beat Thunder to maiden victory

It was a match between the two newest teams in Division 2 of the Essendon District Football League, with both looking for a first win in the competition.

It was debut club Burnside Heights which broke its duck, beating East Sunbury 13.13 (91) to 11.6 (72)

East Sunbury, which lost all 18 matches in its first season in division two last year, started the better of the two sides at the weekend with nine scoring shots to three in the first term, although inaccurate kicking meant the Thunder’s quarter-time lead was only 16 points.

The Bears started to get into the contest in the second term, kicking 6.6 to turn the deficit into a 20-point lead.

The second half followed the same trend as the first – Thunder started the better on the scoreboard before Burnside Heights began to find scoring options.

Three goals to the Bears in the final term was enough to clinch a first-up win. Dean Borg was best for the Bears with four goals.

East Keilor and Roxburgh Park
were among the other winners in Division 2.

Seven goals to one in the first term set up an easy win for East Keilor against Moonee Valley, 21.11 (137) to 12.11 (83), while Roxburgh Park kicked eight goals in the final term to beat Keilor Park 20.16 (136) to 9.9 (63).

In the Premier Division, Keilor lead from start to finish 23-point winners against Airport West 17.12 (114) to 14.7 (91).

Dylan Joyce kicked five goals for the Bulldogs and Rodney Van Riet was named the team’s best.

In Division 1, Taylors Lakes and Hillside had mixed results in close games.

Taylors Lakes held off a fast-finishing Westmeadows to win 11.10 (76) to 10.9 (69).

Only one goal was kicked in the final term of Hillside and Tullamarine’s match, but it was enough for Tulla to get the win 12.8 (80) to 11.7 (73).
