A kaleidoscope of cultures will be on display during this weekend’s third annual Brimbank Cup soccer tournament.
With more than 20 countries to be represented by 33 teams, the event at Kevin Flint Memorial Reserve will be the biggest yet.
Yagiz Adal, president of event organiser Cairnlea FC, is expecting a bumper turn-out of about 4000 people.
“It’s not just a soccer tournament, it’s a celebration of life and different backgrounds,’’ Adal says. ‘‘It’s all about harmony. I’m also looking forward to seeing how some of the community clubs go; they’ve got some good players.”
The three-day carnival, which gives social teams the chance to play with established Football Federation Victoria clubs, grew out of an African nations tournament held in 2011.
Brimbank police Embona taskforce’s Sergeant Matthew Illingworth says the tournament is a great way of improving communication between police and migrant communities.
Off-pitch attractions include children’s activities.
The carnival begins this Friday at 6.30pm, with the grand finals on Sunday – the women’s at 3.15pm, the men’s at 4.40pm. Entry is free.
