Brimbank Cup: 20 nations come together for tournament

Cairnlea Soccer Club officials are working around the clock to deliver the best 2014 Brimbank Cup experience they can.

It will be the biggest event in the club’s history when 33 teams converge on Cairnlea Park from February 14-16 for the round- robin tournament.

Reds president Yagiz Adal told the Weekly it was an honour for his club to host the growing annual event, which rotates around clubs.

“It’s controlled excitement,” he said with a laugh that suggested the tournament was a massive operation.

“We’re very pleased to be hosting it this year.

“I have a good team of people around me and we’re building up to it slowly but surely.”

Cairnlea will be the centre of the Brimbank sporting community for three days.

This is a priceless opportunity for the Reds to open their doors to locals and promote the club and the game.

“It will showcase the club and, hopefully, attract the locals from the area,” Adal said.

The Cairnlea Cup will bring together the multi-cultural Brimbank community, with more than 20 nations represented, either through established Football Federation Victoria clubs or social groups that have put a team together for the one-off event.

Brimbank City Council representative Kate George has played a massive role in uniting the community for this event.

“She’s the driving force,” Adal said.

“She’s the one bringing the communities together, organising the meetings and hosting the meetings.

“She’s been tremendous.”

It will be a massive undertaking for organisers to get the event to run like clockwork, with 46 matches played on the Saturday alone.

The tournament will kick off under lights on the Friday night and the men’s and women’s finals will be played on Sunday.

An exhibition game between a Victorian Police XI and a World XI will take place at noon on the Saturday.
