When presented with the poisoned chalice of winning the toss at an away venue, it’s ‘buyer beware’ if you choose to bat on a foreign pitch.
Sunshine was sold a dud on the first day of the already-fateful two-day clash with Croydon in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association at Croydon Oval on Saturday.
On face value, the Crows were content that Croydon’s pitch would hold up for 80 overs, but there were unwanted demons lurking beneath the surface.
The Crows were swiftly made to rue the decision, bowled out for just 110 in 37.3 overs.
“We were confident going there but I think the pitch conditions weren’t as we expected,” Crows top order batsman Troy Stone told the Weekly. “It was one of the worst ones I’ve played on.”
Croydon then pursued first innings points on day one and raced to 3-127 off 39 overs.
The only Sunshine batsman to handle to conditions was vice captain David Bonavia, who made a hard-working 50 not out.
