VTCA: Sunshine United come back from the dead

A remarkable bowling performance meant Sunshine United could defend a paltry first-innings of 80 against Newport-Digman in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association west B1 grade on Saturday.

Rolled in 57.3 overs a week earlier, the Tigers took the initiative late on day one to reduce Newport-Digman to 4-22.

Led by Indika Dharmawardane (10 overs, seven maidens, 5-14) and Michael Glowacki (19.5 overs, seven maidens, 5-40), United continued to tear through Newport-Digman’s lineup on the second day.

Dharmawardane took the first wicket, capturing Ben Hussey leg before wicket for a duck, and the remaining five wickets fell in quick succession, Newport-Digman bowled out for 74.

Peter Westbrook’s 28 was the only real resistance offered by the visitors.

Making matters worse for Newport-Digman was the tight lines and length bowled by Kawaljit Singh, Vijay Jassi and Leigh Sheridan. The trio didn’t take a wicket but bowled 13 overs between them for 17 runs, ensuring Newport-Digman batsmen weren’t able to exploit other bowlers.

With time still to play in the match United took the opportunity to bat again, reaching 7-172 by stumps, with captain-coach Ben Foster leading the way with 65 not out.

In other west B1 games finished on Saturday, Deer Park pulled off a scarcely believable reverse outright victory against Point Cook.

After losing on first innings a week earlier, Deer Park was staring down a hefty outright loss after being skittled for 51 in its second innings. But James Bonnici snared 8-15 as Point Cook was dismissed for 28, giving Deer Park a 17-run victory.

Sunshine Heights won outright against Airport West St Christopher’s, making 3-243 in its only innings, led by 110 from Will Dawson, and then bowling Airport West out for 96 in its second innings.

Sunshine YCW lost on first innings to Kingsville Baptists.

Keilor’s senior division match against Greenvale was reduced to a one-dayer, and Keilor’s 137 was not good enough to top Greenvale’s 146.

In the north division, Keilor Park was bowled for 114 in pursuit of Laverton’s 178.

In north A1, Sunshine Druids bowled Haig Fawkner out for 76 to take first-innings points, Taylors Lakes made 7-259 and bowled St Albans out for 143 and St Andrews’ 109 was not enough against Aberfeldie’s 180.
