MELBOURNE Knights moved closer to securing a top two finish in the
Victorian Premier League after an important 1-0 road win over Dandenong
Thunder on Friday night.
The Knights left it late to seal the deal, with star striker
Andrew Barisic silencing the George Andrews Reserve faithful with a
winner against the run of play in the 81st minute.
Barisic, a former A-League player recruited from East Bengal in
the Indian I-League, is scoring at will and has six goals in his past
seven games.
Second-placed Knights are six points clear of third-placed Bentleigh Greens and trail leader Northcote City by just three.
The Knights will face long-time rival South Melbourne at Knights Stadium on Sunday.
Meanwhile, a busy week may have caught up with Green Gully in the
league, coughing up a late goal to draw 2-2 with Richmond Eagles at
Green Gully Reserve on Saturday.
Eagles striker Tom Cahill came back to haunt his old club with the
equaliser from the penalty spot in the 88th minute after Gully defender
Sean Harding pushed Kliment Taseski.
Earlier, Gully’s goals came from the head of Rodrigo Vargas and a tap-in from Jason Hayne.
Gully is sixth on the table and level on points with fifth-placed South Melbourne and seventh-placed Hume City.
It faces a must-win game against bottom side Southern Stars at home on Saturday.
