FFV: Penalty sinks leaders Cairnlea

TOP-of-the-table Cairnlea was shocked 1-0 by Yarraville Glory
after a questionable penalty in the Football Federation Victoria men’s
state league 3 north-west at McIvor Reserve on Saturday.

The Reds were incensed when the referee pointed to the spot after a “bit of pushing and shoving” in the box.

The Glory scored from the penalty 10 minutes before half-time and held on for three points in an otherwise even game.

Glory vice-president Sam Hulusi was baffled by the penalty decision.

“We believe a draw would’ve been a fair result but we cop it on the chin and move on.”

Cairnlea remains four points clear of second-placed Westvale.

The Reds will face cross-town rivals North Sunshine Eagles in a 1-v-3 blockbuster at Cairnlea Park on Saturday.

The Eagles are five points behind Cairnlea after crushing lowly
Hume United 4-1, but have two games in hand and will take the title race
down to the wire.

Around the traps, Green Gully Cavaliers fell to sixth in the
Victorian Premier League after a 2-1 loss to Port Melbourne Sharks on
Friday night.

Brian Vanega put the Cavaliers in front on eight minutes.

But his effort was trumped by Luke Bowen, who scored twice in 18 minuts in the second half to earn the Sharks all three points.

In state league 2, Westgate’s hot form was maintained with a 2-1
win over Fitzroy City, Billy Sianidis scoring either side of half-time
for the victors.

Keilor Park edged out bottom side Ballarat Red Devils 2-1 to keep hold of second.

In state league 4, the Western Eagles team pushed for a late
winner but could only grab a share of the points in a 1-1 draw with
Essendon United.

In state league 5, Balmoral made a mess of Sunshine Heights Western Tigers in a 7-1 thrashing,

Brimbank Stallions got the points over Sebastopol Vikings 1-0 and Spring Hills was too strong for Melbourne City in a 3-1 triumph.

Keilor Wolves were hammered 7-1 by league leaders Melton Phoenix.
