WRFL: Albanvale ends on sour note

ALBANVALE kicked just four goals in a 48-point loss to Wyndham Vale in the final round of the Western Region Football League division 2 season.

The Cobras (seventh, 8-10, 84.7 per cent) fell two games and significant percentage short of a finals appearance – a worse finish than last year when they missed finals by less than         2 per cent.

Wyndham Vale controlled much of the game but couldn’t hit the scoreboard in the first half. The Falcons kicked 0.8 in the opening term and 2.6 in the second to lead by only 19 points at half time, despite having 14 more scoring shots.

But eight goals to two in the second half ensured Albanvale’s season wouldn’t end on a high note. Daniel Bartolo kicked two for the losers.

Sunshine Heights, coming off two resounding losses, will meet Wyndham Vale in this weekend’s elimination final. The Dragons were belted by 126 points by Parkside on Saturday, managing just four goals for the afternoon as the Magpies ran riot. The teams last met in round 17, when the Falcons booted 17 goals en route to a 63-point victory. But Sunshine Heights got within 15 points of Wyndham Vale back in round six.

Caroline Springs can call itself ‘best of the rest’, nailing down sixth spot with a 61-point win over Sanctuary Lakes. Springs kicked six goals to one in the first term to get the hot start and was rarely challenged thereafter.

Lindon Harris booted four for the Lakers to finish with 71 goals for the year.

North Sunshine had a tough assignment to finish the season, playing away to Glen Orden, and was thrashed by 238 points. Damien Yze was unstoppable with 14 goals. Jim Koulogiannis kicked two for the Roadrunners, who finish last with one win.

Braybrook finished in eighth spot following an 81-point win over Laverton.
