VPL: Cavaliers finally get the win after replay saga is settled

THE game that almost never ended has finally been given its official conclusion.

The Victorian Premier League clash between Green Gully Cavaliers and Richmond Eagles on May 31 was abandoned because of poor weather.

The Cavaliers were up 2-1 in the 71st minute when the referee took the   players off and they did not return.

The governing body, the Football Federation Victoria, determined the match would be restarted at the time it was abandoned.

The two sides were meant to come back at a later date to play out the final 19 minutes.

That date was set down for June 19 but it didn’t happen.

Cavs general manager Raymond Mamo said in a statement that his side planned to play the remaining time, but the fixture was then referred to the tribunal.

“FFV determined the match will be restarted from the point at which it was abandoned,” Mamo said in a press release.

“The match was abandoned in the 71st minute, one minute short of the 80 per cent mark, at which point the result would have been awarded.

“Green Gully Soccer Club was willing and able to replay the fixture as determined by FFV for June 19.

“We focused our training to take the field of play with the same players  named on the team sheet on May 31, 2013.

“It is unknown to our club the reasons this matter was referred to the tribunal.”

It took 42 days for a conclusion to be drawn.

The tribunal sat last Wednesday night and determined the 2-1 result in favour of Green Gully would stand.

Let’s hope there is no time added on in this saga.
