SUNSHINE let a golden opportunity slip on Saturday as it lost to a superior Spotswood side by 46 points in the Western Region Football League’s division 1.
Before the game the Kangaroos were outright second on the ladder, but have now dropped to fourth, a game ahead of Hoppers Crossing in fifth.
The day started well for Sunshine in heavy but reasonable conditions, as the Kangaroos kicked the only three goals of the first term. The Woodsmen could register just four behinds, the only time this year they’ve been goalless in the opening term.
But Sunshine’s 17-point quarter-time lead was cut to three by half-time as Spotswood roared back into the game with five goals. The second half saw an even bigger drop off for the blue and white as Spotswood got back to some of its best football.
The Roos kicked just three behinds in the third quarter to fall 28 points behind, and the Woodsmen booted another six in the last quarter for good measure. Sunshine’s Patrick Wiggins (three goals) and Simon Wiggins (two) were its only multiple goalscorers.
Coach Brett Jacobs said Spotswood’s skill was evident in the second half. “We didn’t work hard enough when we didn’t have the ball in our hands and they were too clean in the second half,” he said.
Jacobs said his players would be primed for the crucial clash against Altona after a break for the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.
Deer Park’s season of dominance continued unabated as the Lions beat Port Colts by 40 points. St Albans had a runaway 80-point victory over Albion.
