WRFL: Braybrook Bombers find winning form

BRAYBROOK moved into the top six of Western Region Football League’s division 2 following a 26-point win over Caroline Springs on Saturday.

It was the Bombers’ fourth consecutive win after a horror start to the season. With games against Parkside, Sunshine Heights, Albanvale and Manor Lakes in the opening month Braybrook sat second last, winless and with a percentage of 44.5.

But the Bombers have turned it around in the past month with comfortable wins over North Sunshine, Sanctuary Lakes, Laverton and now Caroline Springs, to be sitting just outside a well-established top five.

The Lakers started the game well, kicking ahead early before Braybrook cut the margin to four points at quarter-time. From there the Bombers took control, and after a dominant second quarter held a 19-point lead.

The second half was evenly contested, but Caroline Springs could not keep Braybrook from scoring. Steven Pearce booted four for the victors, taking his season tally to 19 from just three games.

President Paul May said excitement was building at the club. “We’re playing really well at the moment,” he said.

“The last four games we’ve been slow to start but worked really hard in the second half and run out the games.’’

Robert Barbara was the only casualty for the Bombers, hospitalised with a punctured lung and broken rib.

SCORES: Caroline Springs 12.8 (80) lt Braybrook 16.10 (106), Parkside 19.18 (132)d Albanvale 7.12 (54), Sunshine Heights 34.31 (235) d Laverton 5.6 (36), West Footscray 19.24 (138) d North Sunshine 8.4 (52).
