FFV: New season and a new structure

A NEW season is upon us in the Football Federation Victoria.

A revamped competition with a fresh league structure will greet soccer fans this weekend.

The FFV’s aim was to reduce travel times, create more local derbies and have a smoother promotion-relegation system.

Out went the old provisional leagues, in came a five-tier state league to sit beneath the Victorian Premier League.

The mecca for clubs will always be the premier league.

Green Gully Cavaliers and Melbourne Knights will fly the flag for the local area.

The Cavaliers will face South Melbourne in a mouth-watering opening round fixture at Green Gully Reserve on Saturday.

The Knights, our former National Soccer League club, will entertain newly promoted Pascoe Vale at Knights Stadium on Sunday.

In women’s premier league, Cairnlea will remain as a top-flight club.

The Reds will host Casey Comets in their big season launch at Cairnlea Park on Sunday.

All FFV teams will be relieved to get off the training track and into the real action after a long, hot summer of preparations.

Bring it on!
