VTCA: No silver lining for lacklustre Saints

ST Andrews was in a world of pain at stumps on day one against Werribee Centrals in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association west B1 grand final at Laverton Park on Saturday.

The Saints won the toss and elected to bat first, despite dark clouds hovering overhead and the feared reputation of the Centurions’ bowling attack.

It was a decision that was not taken lightly and one they would probably make again, says playing president Simon Krygger.

“The deck was rock hard and looked good to bat on,” he said.

“It still is a good batting deck.”

The Saints failed to make use of it, limping to 7-31 off 22.4 overs before the rain swept in.

The conditions played little part in the Saints’ predicament.

“To be honest, we played some pretty bad shots and it was good bowling,” Krygger said.

“The rain came through about 2.30; it would’ve been better for us if it came through at 2.00!”

Opener Matthew Pipczak was the only batsmen who looked likely to give the Saints a good start, but he was out caught to a spectacular catch at square leg for 10.

Tom Cullum and Mansoor Sardar were at the crease when play was called off.

The Saints have not given up hope, though they are well and truly behind the eight-ball.

“It’s a long final, there’s plenty of cricket still to be played,” Krygger said.
