A group of Braybrook students are hoping they have what it takes in the bake stakes after entering a collection of cakes in the Royal Melbourne Show.
Year 7 and 9 students from Caroline Chisholm Catholic College have entered their creations in the junior cookery competition, with their cupcakes, cakes and gingerbread men currently being judged by show experts.
Supervising teacher Matilda Mattar said that after entering the competition for a number of years, it was the students’ enthusiasm that kept the momentum going.
“I wasn’t sure whether to enter again, but a group of students came up to me in the playground and asked when we were starting to prepare, so we went ahead with it,” Ms Mattar said.
“It’s an opportunity to get involved in something more creative and imaginative than the usual food technology classes – and a chance to show their skills and talent in this area.”
It is exciting for the students to enter in the competition and have the chance to show their friends and family their creations at the Show, according to Ms Mattar, who said a win or a placing would be the icing on the cake.
“I’m pretty hopeful of some good results,” she said.
“They’ve all put in a lot of work, practised at home and put in the extra effort, so we’re hoping to do quite well.
“We try to push creativity and innovation in food tech classes, but this goes to another level with the presentation and the different techniques they learn – doing things you wouldn’t normally learn at this age. We’ve got high hopes for these entries.”
The students’ creations will be on display in the Spotlight Makers Pavilion at the show until October 3.
