Taylors Lakes Secondary College students are raising money for the Kids Cancer Project by writing a book in a day.

The year nine students wrote three stories on August 10, working together from 8am to 8pm. The completed stories will be published and read to children with cancer in hospitals around Australia.

Teacher Stephanie Burrafato said the empathy of her students and their eagerness to participate was something to admire.

“As their teacher, I’ve been tracking their progress from the start of the year and honing in on certain writing skills,” she said.

“To observe them on their writing day implementing the skills and strategies we had been developing throughout the year was amazing.”

The three groups had varying stories, each more different than the last.

The first story is one on the importance of teamwork and celebrating differences, featuring a plumber (David) and a builder (Bunji) who work together to save a school from an alien.

The second is a story of acceptance that sees the protagonist, a swimmer named Benji, gifted a magical pair of headphones.

The final story is set in a futuristic world ravaged by drought that features a chemist and piano tuner who have been selected by the tooth fairy to save the world.
