A group of Caroline Chisholm Catholic College students has gone to war on waste.
The year 7 students from Aspire, the college’s accelerated learning and enhancement program, have penned letters to Coles and Woolworths encouraging them to re-think their cosmetic standards for fruit and vegetables.
Caroline Chisholm English teacher Magda Hoszko said the letters showed the boys that the skills they’d learnt could be applied to real-world situations.
“The boys really wanted to put their persuasive writing skills to use and make a difference,” Ms Hoszko said.
“I was really impressed with the time and effort they put into this. They’re not just one or two paragraphs long – there’s a lot of detail in them. The boys would really like an acknowledgement from the supermarkets. We can’t be the only ones concerned about this.”
One of the students, Aadi, said he was determined to get his message across.
“I know with my family, we try to reduce our waste as much as possible,” he said. “I included a lot of statistics.”

War on Waste was a wake up call.
“The amount of produce I saw going to waste and not even making it to the supermarket was really shocking,” he said.
