Woolworths closes in Sunshine

One of Woolworths’ Sunshine stores will close before the end of the month.

A Woolworths spokesman said the Sunshine Plaza store would permanently close on March 26.

The company plans to move the store’s 120 staff members to other Woolworths outlets in the area.

“We are fully committed to supporting all 120 team members, who we aim to redeploy in other stores in the area,” the spokesman said.

“We wish to thank our customers for their support and we look forward to welcoming them at the neighbouring store in the Sunshine Market Place and other stores in the local area.”

Sunshine Plaza centre management would not reveal who would replace the centre’s flagship tenant.

A Woolworths staff member who has worked at the store for 19 years said on Facebook the store’s closure was “very sad and disappointing”.

“Our staff are not just work mates but a big family, love working there and regular customer [sic] which have now become wonderful friends,” she said.

Brimbank city development director Stuart Menzies said there was no current planning permit application or approval to redevelop the Hampshire Road shopping centre complex.

It last changed hands in December, 2014, when it was purchased for $35 million.
