A Caroline Springs woman who tossed a burning cigarette from a Toyota on Taylors Road, Delahey, will pay $3669 after taking her littering fine to court.
Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Victoria issued the woman with a littering fine after a witness reported her to the 24-hour pollution hotline in 2023.
The case went to the Sunshine Magistrates Court, where the magistrate fined the woman $769 and ordered her to pay EPA Victoria $2900 in costs.
EPA said cigarette butts are the most common form of litter, they often find their way through drains and waterways to the bay, and lit cigarettes can cause fires if they land among grass or bush.
Members of the public can report pollution by calling EPA’s 24-hour hotline on 1300 372 842 or providing details online at epa.vic.gov.au/report-pollution/reporting-pollution
