Keilor’s Jason Whiter spent plenty of time nominating friends for the 2021 Victorian Disability Sport and Recreation Awards.
But come the final nominations, it was Mr Whiter who would be named a finalist in the Masters Sportsperson of the Year.
“I think my wife might have nominated me,” he said.
“It’s a great organisation and the support and recognition they’ve given me is really good.”
Mr Whiter was recognised for his achievements with body building. It had always been something he wanted to do, but was put on the backburner when he lost his eyesight and suffered kidney failure due to diabetes.
“I headed back to the gym in 2018 and my friend told me about ICN [Bodybuilding] and I did my first competition in 2019.”
Mr Whiter also plays blind tennis and has a passion for developing sporting competitions for people with disabilities.
“At the moment I’m trying to get some disability ice hockey up and going,” he said.
“I played ice hockey when I was younger. In Canada there is a blind hockey league. I’ve spoken to a few people who want to play.
“American football is another. I want to make it with mixed abilities.
“I like to see people with disabilities engaged and in good mental health.”
