Albion public transport users will soon have safer and more modern facilities, with the state government announcing it will rebuild Albion station.
Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said the station rebuild will be part of the Melbourne Airport Rail project.
“By rebuilding Albion station, we are getting ready for Melbourne Airport Rail and the Metro Tunnel, both of which will provide further public transport links to the CBD,” she said.
The rebuild of the station will join the delivery of a new station at Tarneit West and planning works for a new Truganina station as part of a package of more than $200 million.
Brimbank mayor Jasmine Nguyen said the commitment towards rebuilding Albion station is welcome.
“Council has been advocating for a much-needed upgrade for Albion Station for some years now, so this is good news for our communities and Brimbank,” she said.
“These are positive steps towards leveraging the Melbourne Airport Rail project to transform Brimbank and the west, and create positive lasting change.”
Cr Nguyen said the council is urging the state government to continue to commit to western public transport infrastructure and adopt the council’s full vision for the Sunshine Station Precinct.
“We want to see an airport rail and Sunshine Superhub that unlocks the investment, development and socio-economic potential of the Sunshine area as a gateway to the greater west,” she said.
Albion and Ardeer Community Club president Neil head said while the community is welcoming the proposed work, it is also important that the proposed works fit in well with the adjacent heritage-listed John Darling Mill site.
“The current station is one of the most dilapidated and poorly accessible in Victoria, so a rebuild is timely,” he said.
“Hopefully, local input and consultation, and heritage architect participation, will be welcome by the project planners, regarding design elements for the new station.
“Let’s take this opportunity to build a magnificent Albion Station precinct, for our community, and as part of the Sunshine City Centre transformation.”
