If you’re visiting the new VicRoads office in Sunshine you would be well advised to go to the toilet beforehand.
The Clarke Street office opened its doors to the public in February. The multi-million dollar project was touted as a new, contemporary office that aims to be environmentally sustainable while providing a comfortable and pleasant workplace – but has no public rest rooms.
Local resident Peter Thomson, who has led a lengthy campaign to continue licence and roadworthy testing at Sunshine, said it’s another example of the office not meeting community needs.
“It’s an absolute disgrace for a facility in this day and age to not be fitted with public toilets, especially when you factor in that wait times at VicRoads can be lengthy,” Mr Thomson said.
“To not offer toilets or even accept cash, especially given the fact we have an older demographic, shows that this isn’t meeting the community’s needs.”
A VicRoads spokesperson said in the case of an emergency, the manager or team leader at the office will use their discretion to provide customers with access to staff toilets. For non emergency situations, the public will have to use neighbouring facilities.
“There are a number of public toilet facilities surrounding the hub at Sunshine and customers are usually directed to these facilities,” the spokesperson said.
While Mr Thomson said he doesn’t expect public rest rooms to be installed any time soon, he vowed to continue to push for the return of licence and roadworthy testing which were stopped in Sunshine when VicRoads moved to the new office.
“Just because the new office is operational, doesn’t mean we’ll stop this push. I’ll keep going as long as people want me to.”
A rally was held yesterday at the VicRoads office as the fight to return licence and roadworthy testing to Sunshine continued.
