Waste dumped in Sunshine West

Dangerous waste has been discovered at a site in Sunshine North, following an investigation by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA)

The EPA acted upon the dumped waste found at 270 McIntyre Road, Sunshine North on August 12 with the disposal said to be ongoing.

At the site was a mix of industrial waste and dangerous goods that included potentially flammable materials such as hydrocarbon oils, solvents, and acids, the EPA said.

The property is state government owned but overseen by a private leaseholder and professional facilities manager. The EPA could not disclose where the waste came from for legal reasons as the investigation is ongoing.

The waste was discovered following monitoring that resulted in an EPA inspection the week prior to the discovery.

The EPA worked with police, WorkSafe and Brimbank council to uncover the waste.

Clean up of the site is ongoing with Fire Rescue Victoria assisting and legal direction put in place from the EPA to ensure the site is kept secure at all times.

EPA west metro regional manager, Steve Lansdell said: “Our community in the west does not deserve this and could not be left at risk from chemical and industrial waste which is why we’ve enforced such quick action”.
