Walking for a cause

Brimbank locals, community leaders and politicians marched in a community walk on Wednesday 10 December as part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence global campaign.

The campaign, which ran from 25 November to 10 December, aims to raise awareness and calls for action to end violence against women and girls.

Brimbank mayor Virginia Tachos said council has long supported the campaign.

“I’m committed to making our city genuinely gender-equitable — a place where women and gender-diverse people can live free from violence,” Cr Tachos said.

“By supporting the 16 Days of Activism campaign, we can challenge the norms and behaviours that allow gender-based violence to persist.

“Everyone deserves respect, equality, and the opportunity to live safely and fully.

“I’m thrilled to see so many community members joining the ‘Community Walk for Action’ in support of this important cause.”

This year council partnered with CommUnity+ to host a range of community activities for the campaign which council said helped Brimbank residents learn, reflect and take action.

If you or someone you know is experiencing or at risk of experiencing family violence seek help from police or a support service.

1800RESPECT is a 24-hour national sexual assault, family and domestic violence counselling line.

In an emergency call triple-0.
