A Victoria University employee has been sentenced to prison following an investigation by the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC) into the misappropriation of more than half a million dollars of university funds.

Kamaljeet Kaur Gill, an employee of Victoria University, was sentenced to three years and six months jail on March 27 after pleading guilty at the Melbourne County Court to the offences of misconduct in public office and obtaining property by deception and theft.

The court heard that Gill had fraudulently obtained almost 200 EFTPOS gift cards to the value of $614,261.50 using Victoria University funds after submitting falsified invoices via a university procurement system.

A further 102 Coles Myer gift cards belonging to Victoria University, with a value of $36,650.00, were also stolen by Gill, who was employed in an administrative position by the university.

Gill was prosecuted by the Office of Public Prosecutions following IBAC’s Operation Franklin investigation.

The investigation started in late 2018.

An IBAC spokesperson told SBS that Gill was charged with one count of misconduct in public office by IBAC on March 1, 2019. Additional charges were laid against Gill on May 8, 2019, the spokesperson added.
