The speed limit along the Old Calder Highway in Keilor is being reviewed by VicRoads.
The stretch of road, which runs through Keilor Village, has been the subject of calls for safety improvements.
Last month, a 61-year-old Kings Park man died in hospital after he was struck by a car while attempting to cross the road about noon on Sunday, May 6.
The current speed limit through Keilor Village is 60km/h.
VicRoads director transport and planning, metro north west David Teague said a 40km/h school zone would be implemented.
“We’re planning to introduce a new 40km/h school speed zone on Old Calder Highway, between Hislop Street and Arabin Street,” Mr Teague said.
“We’re also reviewing the existing speed zone on Old Calder Highway, east of Bonfield Street, and will continue to work with our road safety partners, including Victoria Police, to encourage safe behaviours for all road users.”
Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice welcomed the safety reviews.
“We understand that VicRoads is reviewing speed limits on parts of the Old Calder Highway, in Keilor and considering implementing a school zone speed restriction surrounding the pedestrian crossing,” she said.
Cr Giudice said the council supported the introduction of a school zone speed restriction and had previously asked VicRoads to reduce the speed limit through Keilor Village.
“Pedestrian safety is important to everyone in our community and we support improvements that will enhance safety on our roads,” she said.
VicRoads could not say when the new speed limits would be introduced.
Factors including the number of access points, neighbouring speed zones, road user types and crash history will be taken into account before any decision to change the speed limit outside of the school zone.
