Construction of an overpass to free up one of the Calder Freeway’s most awkward intersections is being investigated by VicRoads.
The investigation into a Calder Park Drive overpass follows last week’s announcement of a review of the freeway’s 80km/h speed limit from the Melton Highway to about 430 metres south-east of Calder Park Drive, with a decision expected soon.
VicRoads’ Metro North West regional director, Vince Punaro, said an overpass was one option on the table.
“VicRoads recognises the Calder Freeway is a crucial part of Victoria’s road network and we are currently investigating a proposal to develop an interchange at Calder Park Drive,” he said.

Macedon Ranges councillor Russell Mowatt said that as a frequent freeway traveller, he thought it “paramount” that the government continue with the “future development and forward planning for the Calder Park Drive interchange, as well as widening this area from Keilor Park Drive through to Holden Road”.
“Currently 50,000 vehicle movements a day occur through this stretch and, over the next five to 10 years, it’s estimated by VicRoads to increase to 100,000 a day. We need a bipartisan approach now … rather than just talking. Action speaks louder than words.”
There were 14 recorded crashes on the Calder Freeway between Overnewton and Holden roads between January 2012 and December 2014, with five resulting in serious injuries, government data reveals.
Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said the government would consider VicRoads’ proposal.
