Brimbank workers in high UV industries are at risk of skin cancer.

Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show 15,099 Brimbank residents work in the five industries that have the highest UV exposure, including agriculture, forestry and fishing, mining and electricity.

SunSmart manager Heather Walker has said outdoor workers need to make sun protection a priority.

“The more time you spend outdoors, the greater your risk of skin cancer, which is why people who work outdoors need to make sun protection a staple of their health and safety kit,” Ms Walker said.

“Because we’re still getting those cool and cloudy spring days, people can get caught out. But it’s the sun’s UV … that damages your skin, causing sunburn, tanning and skin cancer.

“Any unprotected skin will be damaged, so it’s crucial … to take action now.”

Ms Walker said employers and safety managers need to treat UV as they would any other health or safety risk.

“Providing a protective uniform may not be enough in terms of managing UV risk,” Ms Walker said.

“People who work outdoors need year-round sun protection that includes clothing, a broad brimmed hat, sunscreen and eye protection, as well as control measures like shade and regular breaks.”
