Wenhao Wu, Liem Le, Laura Mehmet and Ella Klinkermann (pictured) befriended a group of students from Shiaying Junior High School in Taiwan last year.

Their Taiwanese friends were in Australia as part of a study tour and dropped into Sunshine College’s west campus for three days to sit-in on maths, English and music lessons.

West Campus Principal Andrew Pitrakkou said they formed lasting friendships with the students, and pledged to reciprocate the visit. So on December 13 Laura, Ella, Liem and Wenhao will jet off to Tainan, a city in Taiwan’s south coast, and join the students in celebrating the school’s 60th anniversary.

“They are making us an integral part of the ceremony and are planting a pine bamboo garden at their school to honour and welcome us,” Mr Pitrakkou said.

The Sunshine College students will spend a week there before flying home. Mr Pitrakkou, who is joining them on the trip, said he would also talk to the school about forming a “sister school” relationship.
