Two bodies have been found in a silver 1999 Ford sedan on the side of the road at Plumpton, with police not ruling out murder-suicide.

A Melton Council worker made the grisly discovery on Taylors Road, near Vere Court, Plumpton about 11.30am this morning.

Detective Senior Sergeant Stuart Bailey, of the Homicide Squad, said a man, in his 50s, and a woman, in her late 40s, were found in the car, which had bullet holes in the windscreen.

The man was found with a bullet wound to his upper body.

Detective Senior Sergeant Bailey said the woman’s body was found slumped in the rear seat of the car, while the man was found in the driver’s seat with a long-arm fire-arm near him.

“The cause of death for both these people is yet to be established,” Detective Senior Sergeant Bailey said.

“We currently have ballistics and other forensic teams to establish what has occurred.”

Detective Senior Sergeant Bailey said the deceased people had not been formally identified, but police believed the two were known to each other.

He did not say whether the duo were married or in a relationship.

The car was last sighted at about Wednesday 12.15pm at the location where it was found, but police believe it could have been there as early as Tuesday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Bailey said the council workers was obviously shocked and undergoing counselling after “what was a fairly gruesome discovery”.

He urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A post-mortem will be conducted later this afternoon or early tomorrow morning.

Detective Senior Sergeant Bailey said there had been some reports to police about the deceased but would not go into further details.

“There was an inquiry made in relation to a welfare check earlier today but we’re still working on that information to see if it relates to this incident,” he said.

“We do [know where they’re from], but I’m not going to release that at this present time until they’ve been formally identified and relatives can be informed.”

It is likely the pair would have known the area well, Detective Senior Sergeant Bailey said.
