Two arrested after drag racing in Derrimut

Police have charged two men after two vehicles were caught drag racing in Derrimut at the weekend.

Police first detected the cars on Boundary Road about 10.30pm on Saturday night.

It is alleged they were travelling at about 123km/h in an 80km/h zone, before speeding off through red lights on Palmers Road in Truganina at about 145km/h.

Police intercepted the two vehicles and both drivers were arrested.

A 35-year-old Tullamarine man has been charged with a number of offences including reckless conduct endangering life, reckless conduct endangering serious injury, committing an indictable offence whilst on bail, exceeding the speed limit, disobeying red traffic lights and engaging in a drag race.

He was released on bail.

A 38-year-old Delahey man was also charged with a number of offences including reckless conduct endangering life, reckless conduct endangering serious injury, committing an indictable offence whilst on bail, unlicenced driving, exceeding the speed limit, disobeying red traffic lights and engaging in a drag race.

He has been remanded into custody and will reappear in court this week.

Police have also seized both vehicles and an application for forfeiture of the vehicles will be made at court.

The arrests are part of operation Achilles where police saturate known hoon hotspots, ensuring they can rapidly respond to high risk driving events.
