Kevin Medhurst was a legend of Brimbank’s cricket scene.
A talented all-rounder, the 57-year-old was often credited with single-handedly winning games of cricket.
Family, friends and teammates have fondly remembered Mr Medhurst as a great cricketer, and even better friend, after his sudden death last week.
In his younger days, Mr Medhurst was an outstanding cricketer at high levels, playing a major role in helping the Albion Cricket Club taste premiership success.
More recently, he represented Keilor Cricket Club in veterans cricket, in which he was widely regarded as a legend.
Club president Jeff Reeves, who went on two international tours with Mr Medhurst, said his friend was a phenomenal cricketer and an even better person.
“We went on a tour of England back in 2013 and to Barbados in May this year,” Mr Reeves said. “He was really good on the field, taking a few wickets and making runs, but he was also fantastic company.”
In addition to the international tours,
Mr Medhurst was one of the main architects of the Keilor club’s early success.
“Kevin was one of the original members and a big part of helping us win three premierships,” Mr Reeves said. “He played in the first one before we split up the sides a bit.”
Having played against Mr Medhurst early in their cricketing careers, Mr Reeves said he was thankful his one-time foe became a friend.
“I played against him when we were younger and he was certainly very talented,” Mr Reeves said. “It was certainly a lot nicer playing alongside him rather than against him.
“But, more importantly, he was a good friend of the club and will be sadly missed.”
Mr Medhurst is survived by his wife Elaine and children Peter, Caitlyn, Graeme, Linda and Joshua.
