Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander women of the west are featured in an exhibition that is part of Brimbank’s NAIDOC Week celebrations.
The exhibition, Honouring Women of the West, features 24 photographic portraits and will be on show until Sunday, July 15.
The images are on display at St Albans Community Centre on Princess Street, St Albans, and will tour other locations throughout the western region after this week.
Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said the images captured an inspirational side of the local indigenous and Torres Strait Islander women and their contribution to their communities.
“This is a great opportunity for everyone to come together and support Brimbank’s local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community,” she said. “Brimbank council is committed to ensuring the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal people are celebrated throughout the municipality.
“This year’s theme – ‘Because of her, we can’ – is particularly poignant.
“It is not only a chance to celebrate the triumphs of indigenous women, but to recognise the importance of continuing work to reduce adversities still experienced by indigenous women in our communities.”
NAIDOC Week is celebrated across Australia each July in recognition of the history, culture and achievements of indigenous and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Brimbank’s official NAIDOC Week celebrations, which will include flag raising and smoke ceremonies, will be held this Thursday at Brimbank Community and Civic Centre from 11am. Details: brimbank.vic.gov.au/events/celebrate-naidoc-week
