Brimbank council is aiming to make travel easier for disadvantaged residents, with a draft transport disadvantage policy put out for community consultation.
The policy is designed to guide the development of a sustainable transport system for Brimbank and also support public health, social and economic outcomes for the community.
Brimbank mayor John Hedditch said the policy was important for the future of Brimbank.
“As the second largest municipality in Melbourne, this is an especially relevant issue for Brimbank,” Cr Hedditch said.
“We are disadvantaged by many residential areas and industrial precincts not having close access to public transport routes and there is increasing pressure to provide transport services to meet the requirements of the community.
“The development of the draft Brimbank transport disadvantage policy provides council with a policy position designed to guide the development of a sustainable transport system that is affordable and accessible, and to reduce the nature and extent of transport disadvantage in Brimbank.”
The policy identifies over-reliance on car travel within Brimbank, an outdated public transport system and access to transport services as key areas to address.
Residents can read the draft policy and provide feedback at brimbank.vic.gov.au until July 21.
