Planning is under way for a proposed residential development of 72 townhouses in Keilor Park.
The site, at 45 Eliza Street, was occupied by the former Keilor Park Primary School which closed in 2009.
Development Victoria will undertake community engagement and hold information sessions on Wednesday, June 27, from 6-8pm and on Saturday, June 30, from 2.30-4.40pm.
Both sessions will be held at the Keilor Park Hall.
The site covers 1.84 hectares and is located within an established residential precinct.
Development Victoria says its proposal is aimed at aligning with the surrounding area’s character and offers a mix of two and four-bedroom double-storey townhouses.
But the state Coalition says it will introduce, if elected, strict new planning rules within its first 100 days of office to protect the livability of suburbs from over-development.
Under the changes, it would re-introduce a two-dwelling limit on lots in neighbourhood residential zones and bring back the nine-metre discretionary height limit in the general residential zone.
Opposition Leader Matthew Guy said the changes would protect Melbourne’s suburbs.
“Only a Liberal National government will introduce strict planning rules to protect our suburbs from inappropriate over-development,” he said.
“Victoria needs the right growth in the right places, not allowing anything to be built anywhere.”
Opposition planning spokesman David Davis said the unique character of its suburbs and towns was what made living in Melbourne and Victoria so great.
“A Liberal Nationals Government will put the brakes on this unplanned over-development and give control back to residents and their councils,” he said.
The site – bounded by Eliza, Collinson, Queensbury and Erebus streets – was rezoned in 2017 from public use zone 2 (education) to neighbourhood residential.
Development Victoria plans to submit a planning permit application to Brimbank council next month.
