What started out as a school project has grown into something much bigger for four Sunshine Harvester Primary School kids.
Hamid, Blue Bani, Kevin, Peter and their fellow grade 6 classmates were asked to undertake a passion project in the final term of the year, and the quartet decided they would raise money for the Cancer Council by making loom band bracelets and selling them to the school community.
After presenting their cause at a school assembly, they set out with the goal of raising $300, but to date have raised more than $800 through the generosity of the community and their own hard work.
Teacher Betty D’Agostino said it was a wonderful example.
“I was quite overwhelmed by what they achieved, and the staff were gobsmacked,” Ms D’Agostino said.
“They chose cancer for their passion project because they’ve all known someone who’s been touched by cancer, and they wanted to raise some money and awareness for the Cancer Council and help find a cure.
“They’ve dedicated lots of time to this, after school, in classes, at lunchtime, and they always sell out of what they make, which is about 40 bracelets a day.”
The quartet will present the money to the Cancer Council in the coming days.
