A 15-year-old girl from Wollert has died after being thrown from a car following a single vehicle crash in Epping.

The girl, believed to be the driver, was thrown from the car after losing control in Cooper Street about 1.10am.

Police said the Holden Astra was believed to be stolen from Somerton shortly before the crash.

The girl died at the scene.

A 16-year-old girl from Keilor was also treated at the scene and was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The Major Collision Investigation Unit’s Detective Sergeant Jarrod Dwyer told radio station 3AW that tyre marks at the scene indicated speed could have been a factor in the crash.

“We have significant tyre marks which indicate high speed prior to the vehicle losing control and mounting the centre media strip at which point it’s rolled over, ejected one of the occupants who has later been declared deceased at the scene,” he said.

Cooper Street was closed between Medowlink Circuit and the Hume Freeway for several hours this morning, but has since re-opened.

Anyone who saw the car prior to the crash is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
