An initiative aimed at getting more people talking about cancer is coming to Brimbank.
Run by the North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN), the Let’s Talk about Cancer pop-up shop is in Sunshine Plaza until March 3, providing a space for people to come in and talk to friendly, trained staff and volunteers about how to prevent and detect cancer.
People will be able to discuss lifestyle changes to help prevent cancers, family history, screening services available and symptoms and signs to talk to their doctor about.
NWMPHN chief executive adjunct associate professor Christopher Carter said prevention and early detection were crucial to bringing cancer rates down.
“Around one-third of cancers are preventable through lifestyle changes such as healthier diets, reducing alcohol consumption, quitting smoking and avoiding excessive sun exposure,” adjunct professor Carter said.
“Using cancer-screening services is also crucial – the sooner cancer is detected, the more effective options there are for treatment. This initiative aims to get people talking about cancer with their GP, friends and family, conversations which could save their lives.”
A launch event will be held at 11am on February 14 at shop 33, Sunshine Plaza, 324 Hampshire Road, Sunshine.
