On weekends, Sylvester Saldanha likes to enjoy a drink or two with friends.
But this month, he’s going without in a show of support for his father, Joseph, who was diagnosed with bile duct cancer three months ago.
The accountant says, so far, it hasn’t been easy.
“Being a busy time of the year and not having a drink has been difficult already. Not to mention there are five weekends this July … but it’s all for a good cause.”
During Dry July, a fundraising initiative that raises money for cancer support organisations, Mr Saldanha hopes to raise $1000 by month’s end.
So far he’s received $500 in donations from family and friends.
He hopes his campaign will raise awareness about the rare type of cancer his dad has been diagnosed with.
According to Cancer Council Victoria, bile duct cancer or cholangiocarcinoma, is a rare form of the disease, with just 92 cases diagnosed in Victoria each year.
